Type I: anaphylactic or immediate hypersensitivity. Antigen binding to preformed IgE antibodies attached to the surface of the mast cell or basophil causes release of inflammatory mediators, e.g., histamine, leukotrienes, cytokines, proteases, arachidonic acid metabolites, and enzymatic mediators (see Chapter 2), which produce the clinical manifestations. Examples of type I diseases include anaphylactic shock, allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, and acute drug allergic reactions.
