The membrane attack complex (MAC)

After activated C5 binds to C6, C7 and C8 subsequently bind, forming the complex C5b678, which is then capable of binding multiple molecules of C9. This forms a cylindrical structure, C5b6789, termed the MAC. This structure is inserted through the cell membrane, breaching the osmotic barrier of the cell wall, ultimately resulting in death of the cell.
