Basophils and mast cells

Basophils and mast cells release the mediators of immediate hypersensitivity (e.g., histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandins, and platelet-activating factor [PAF]) , which have significant effects on the vasculature and on smooth muscle. Basophils circulate, whereas mast cells are present only in tissue, and in much larger numbers. These cells have high-affinity receptors for IgE (FceRI) and are involved in immediate and late-phase allergic reactions.
