Amplification

Constituent proteins of the amplification pathway include C3b, factors B and D, and properdin. Under normal circumstances, an alternative pathway convertase, which amplifies the activation of this pathway, is quite unstable and rapidly decays. Properdin binds to this alter-native pathway convertase, stabilizing and retarding its decay and allowing it to perpetuate the complement cascade.
